Keeping Children Safe Online & On Social Media

03 February 2025

In today's digital world, social media plays a significant role in how young people connect, learn, and express themselves. However, for children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN), navigating this world can present unique challenges. As parents, ensuring their safety while allowing them to enjoy the benefits of social media is crucial. Below are some top tips to help keep children and young people safe online.

Use parental controls

Most devices and apps offer built-in parental controls to filter content, set screen time limits, and restrict certain activities. Take advantage of these settings to create a safer digital environment.

Teach safe sharing practices

Children and young people may not always understand the consequences of sharing personal information. Reinforce the importance of keeping details like full names, addresses, and school names private.

Encourage open communication

Make sure your child feels comfortable talking to you about their online experiences. Encourage them to share if they see or experience anything upsetting, confusing, or inappropriate.

Supervise online activity

Where possible, keep screens in common areas and periodically check their activity. For younger children or those who may struggle with understanding online risks, consider co-browsing together.

Choose SEN-friendly platforms

Some social media platforms and online communities cater specifically to children with additional needs. Research safe spaces where your child can interact with others in a supportive environment.

Teach cyberbullying awareness

Neurodivergent children and young people can be more vulnerable to online bullying. Teach them how to recognise negative behaviour, block harmful users, and report any concerning interactions.

Practice social scenarios

Role-playing different online situations can help children and young people understand appropriate responses to messages, friend requests, and potential dangers. This can build their confidence and decision-making skills.

Limit screen time

Balance is key. Encourage regular breaks from screens to engage in offline activities, reducing the risk of overexposure and dependency on digital devices.

Stay informed and involved

Social media trends change frequently. Keep up to date with the latest apps, privacy settings, and potential risks so you can guide your child effectively.

Review age ratings and additional controls

Different social media platforms have age restrictions and extra safety measures for users under 18. For example, TikTok offers Family Pairing, which allows parents to manage screen time, restrict direct messaging, and control content exposure. Reviewing these settings ensures that young people are using age-appropriate platforms with adequate protections.

By implementing these strategies, you can help to maintain a proactive and supportive approach, ensuring your child has the right tools and knowledge to enjoy the online world securely.
