Year of the Rabbit celebrated
Children, young people and staff from across our Group recently swopped knives and forks for chopsticks and got stuck into a banquet of tasty food in celebration of Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rabbit.
Fernpark Children’s Home
Young people and staff from Fernpark Children’s Home celebrated by decorating their dining room and kitchen with colourful balloons, flags and banners ahead of their festivities.
During the day, they enjoyed researching the history of the celebration and explored which animal represented their birth year before sitting down with a menu to choose their evening meal.
Lavender Lodge School
Over at Lavender Lodge School, pupils enjoyed a 'drop down,' a day where lessons are linked to the topic. They celebrated with various class-based activities and workshops, including creating handmade pieces of art ranging from rabbit prints to making colourful dragon puppets and a whole school collaboration with the creation of a vast dragon display. They also listened to stories about animals and even had time to decorate cookies.
Pupils also received a red envelope with affirmations and were thrilled to also share the hidden messages in their fortune cookie.
Deputy Head Teacher, Barbara Gonzalez commented on the day's events:
"This was our first thoroughly planned 'drop down' day, and was a great success. It was terrific seeing pupils from different classes and ages working together and enjoying the workshops."
Joey Viney, a pupil from Paddington Class, said:
"Dragons! Fortune cookies! This is the best day of my whole life!"
Oversands School
At Oversands School, Cooks Gaynor Nowell and Flora Tarr cooked up a banquet of food fit for an emperor! They treated everyone to a delicious menu of sticky chicken, beef in a tasty sauce, stir-fried vegetable noodles, spring rolls, prawn toast, and some scrumptious fortune cookies!
Westmorland School
Finally, Lions and Leopards Class at Westmorland School celebrated in style, taking a trip to the Chinese Buffet in Wigan, where robots served their food!
During the trip, they enjoyed learning about Chinese traditions and mastered the art of using chopsticks while tucking into a feast of culinary delights with friends.
