Heroes Memorial unveiled
Pupils and staff from Greenholm School recently invited parents and carers, and members from the local community to a grand unveiling of the Heroes Memorial at the Dr George Rice Community Garden in Sutton.
Since June 2022, pupils from Strawberry Lodge Campus have played a vital role in restoring and managing the work in the garden through work-based learning and volunteering.
At the heart of the garden is the Everyday Heroes Memorial, made with ceramic hearts created during COVID, and is framed by a small social orchard, a sensory garden and play area, raised beds to enable accessible gardening and a community noticeboard.
The fantastic efforts accomplished prepared the garden to be dedicated by the Bishop of Croydon in the autumn of last year, and since, pupils have continued to help maintain the garden for all the community of Sutton to enjoy.
Teacher Mark Packham commented:
"This garden is a true celebration of the selfless work of professionals and volunteers who helped the nation during the pandemic."
He continued:
"Well done to all our pupils who contributed to helping restore this piece of land. You're truly awesome!"
