Bridgeway School Blog 24: Award preparations underway

19 November 2021

Pupils and staff from Bridgeway School are working towards the Silver Award for the Rights Respecting School Award from Unicef. The award puts children’s rights at the heart of schools in the UK and recognises a school’s achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice within the school and beyond.

The silver award aims to ensure that pupils and staff are ‘Rights Aware’. To develop this understanding, the school enjoyed a PSHE ‘Drop Down' where form tutors encouraged pupils to create a charter using articles from the UNICEF Convention on the Rights of the Child. Charters allow pupils to say what they want to see from duty bearers around school whilst also recognising their responsibilities when following school rules.

Later on in the morning, forms had fun taking part in a team-building exercise which saw some groups having a go at building a newspaper tower and an ‘egg drop’ challenge.

Pupils worked really well in their teams, demonstrating some of the ‘rights’ learnt previously, such as listening and communication skills and working together to achieve a common goal.

The school’s accreditation visit will take place in January 2022. Good luck team!
