Maddie’s Story
Transitioning from primary school to secondary can be difficult for any young person but for some, this can be a particularly challenging time. This scenario was pupil Maddie’s reality as she moved over to Chilworth House Upper School from our partner school, Chilworth House Lower School.
Support
The unsettled little girl was clearly finding it difficult to adjust in the bigger school setting and started to present challenging behaviours in the classroom that resulted in her disengaging with learning. As quickly as this happened, our Internal Team Around the Child (ITAC) approach was swiftly put in place to support Maddie and help her to enjoy learning again.
ITAC is a model that all Witherslack Group settings implement and the approach ensures that young people like Maddie have access to cohesive services with all practitioners concerned with the young person meeting regularly. This ensure the services that are delivered are integrated, prioritied, coherent and achieve their intended outcomes.
Achievement
Through careful planning and regular meetings with Maddie’s allocated teaching assistant, teaching staff, the pastoral team, therapy team and her parents, strategies were put in place to enable her to settle into the school and self-regulate her behaviours sustainably, so that she could access the exciting curriculum that
awaited her.
Fast forward to now, the frustrated girl who joined us has grown into a member of the school community who has friends and can be seen smiling and thoroughly enjoying school life. This young lady has demonstrated that you can achieve anything and can adapt to change to embrace the next chapter and beyond.
