Chris’ Story

“Chris has transformed into a popular member of the school community and although there have been challenges along the way, his future looks as bright as his mirror glazed cakes”

Chris’ Story

When Chris arrived at Cumberland School he had not accessed any form of education for 18 months. He was introduced to the curriculum during his transition phase to the school, but was frustrated and displayed challenging behaviours as he lacked confidence in subjects that he had previously struggled with. His experiences also resulted in him not being able to develop the social skills needed to form and sustain friendships with peers.

Support

Determined for Chris to succeed, his form tutor spent a great deal of time ensuring that he had a smooth and successful transition into the school. Through careful planning, he eventually accessed the whole curriculum and it quickly became apparent that he thrived in his food technology lessons, where he produced a wide range of impressive dishes and desserts.

Chris is now making good progress in his academic subjects and has been given the opportunity to attend a vocational centre where he is specialising in catering. He attends a session weekly to refine his culinary skills and explore new avenues for his talents.

Achievement

The young boy who struggled with friendships now has a circle of friends who share similar interests and when new pupils join the school, Chris understands that they must feel how he felt and so goes out of his way to make them feel welcome.

From being a young person who was very unsure of himself, Chris has transformed into a popular member of the school community and although there have been challenges along the way, his future looks as bright as his mirror glazed cakes.
