What does a typical day look like for a teaching assistant?

04 February 2025

Making the decision to change career or start a new job can be incredibly daunting and a difficult decision to make, but here is why you should think about joining our teaching assistant in special education.

In the world of special education, no two days are ever the same. Every day brings its own unique challenges and rewards, but one thing is always constant: the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people. As a teaching assistant, you’re not just supporting students—you’re helping create an environment of encouragement and care, where each child has the chance to flourish and reach their full potential.

We all have memories of our time in school, the highs and the struggles. Those moments of both triumph and frustration are part of every student’s journey. By channelling those memories, you’ll be able to see the world through the eyes of our students, offering them the support and understanding they need when things get tough. Whether it’s helping a student who is struggling to grasp a concept, offering a calming presence when emotions run high, or simply being there for a young person who needs someone to turn to, your role is vital in shaping their school experience.

Working alongside the teacher, you’ll be part of a dynamic team that tailors each student’s learning experience to their needs. This means that every activity and task is designed to help students engage and learn in ways that suit them best. It’s not just about teaching; it’s about meeting students where they are and helping them grow. From the joy of seeing a student light up when they finally understand a challenging math problem to the determination in their eyes as they push through frustrations with spelling or regulation, you’ll witness moments of progress that can be truly inspiring.

A typical day might start with a quick catch-up with the teacher to go over the plan for the day. Together, you’ll prepare any materials or paperwork needed for the lessons ahead and make sure the classroom is ready for the students. During lessons, you’ll provide one-on-one support, help students stay focused, and assist with any tasks they find challenging. There will also be times when you take students aside to help them regulate their emotions or offer a safe space if they’re feeling overwhelmed. You’ll work closely with the clinical team, ensuring that each student gets the right support at the right time.

As a teaching assistant, you’re not just supporting students—you’re supporting the entire team. You help the teacher by ensuring they have everything they need to lead the best lessons possible, and in turn, you’re supported by a team that’s always there to lend a hand. The collaborative nature of the role means you’ll never be on your own. From working together with colleagues, to witnessing the growth of the students, every day offers new opportunities to build meaningful connections and make a lasting impact.

In this role, you’re not just an assistant—you’re a vital part of a team dedicated to providing the best possible experience for every student. The rewards are immense, seeing students overcome obstacles, helping them build confidence, and knowing that you’re playing a key part in their journey toward a brighter future. Whether you’re celebrating their successes or guiding them through the tough moments, your work as a teaching assistant is crucial to helping them dream bigger, aim higher, and achieve more than they ever thought possible.
